Poem: How Are You?

Has life been kind to you?
Telling lies like ‘I’m doing fine’
Even your emotions fill the pain in your throat
And a smile can’t disguise the wintry bitterness in your eyes
You know you made the wrong move
Or regretted at some point
But sorry always comes too late, dear one

What we had was a reason to feel something
Perhaps a new expression of our lives
We looked good together and you saw it too
Drenched in the rain in each other’s arms
Seeing the world in a different light
Everything you’ve ever dreamed of

Do you find it strange I understand you?
If only you’d believed me from day one
I don’t know who you think you’re messing with
You underestimate me

Once, twice
I held your hand again
Carried on despite the wound you inflicted
I didn’t want to worry about what they said
Shame on me for thinking you were not the same

Third time, exhaustion consumed me
Then you shifted blame, couldn’t face the truth
You failed to even address me directly
I am free; You’re no longer a priority
Truly, I and this love deserves better

Thank you for reading!
